Module
INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING
24 / 08 / 2020
This module is led by Ms. Ann See Peng. In this module, we learn how to interpret the type of drawing representation used in the construction industry. Furthermore, we also learn the basic principles of drawing conventions as communications in architecture. Other than that, we also learn orthogonal projections to express drawings. The aim of this module is to allow students to familiarize ourselves with the basic representation of the built and natural environment through drawings.
ASSIGNMENT 1
The objective of this assignment was to introduce us to the concept of producing technical drawings through the capturing of details. These drawings are of our own selected household objects that we could find, as they are simple enough to capture details of the item. We were required to submit drawings with a complete title block.
PROGRESS
I started this assignment was quite all right, as I started with my plan view drawing which was followed by my front elevation for week one and the rest of my elevations. The biggest challenge in producing these drawings was trying to tally up the dimensions for my labeling machine. My first 2 attempts at producing the drawings weren’t satisfactory. Therefore I kept drawing until I was satisfied. During the 3rd week, I searched online for the section of a labeling machine and tried my best to replicate one along with my imagination of the section. I then continued to do the final touch-ups before the due date and had it done on time. I was glad that I planned my time properly and completed this assignment with ease.
This was a nice introduction to the module and its objectives. I am glad that I was able produce the simplest form of communicative technical drawings. I find that it takes a lot of focus, attention to capture the details of an object so that it could be understood by other.
ASSIGNMENT 2
For this assignment, we were asked to split into groups and were assigned a specific location in campus and to produce a set of technical drawings each. Since we were in a middle of a pandemic and were in RMCO, we faced some hardships and setbacks.
progress
My group started this assignment by creating a group chat and also discussed a time to measure our site. The site allocated to us was C7. In the measuring process, we had many setbacks as we didn’t get accurate measurements which caused our floor plan to be inaccurate as incorrect. During the 6th week, we were a little behind a class but also got wiser when we were measuring for our elevation drawings, as we learned the technique of getting accurate measurements. Even though we found a better method, we still had a hard time measuring. After a lot of measuring and drawing, we slowly moved on into week 7 and 8. According to my memory, I faced some difficulty as I didn’t yet fully comprehend the conventions that I was learning. Thankfully I managed to produce a complete set of technical drawings for Ms. Ann for this assignment. Looking back upon the hardships, I’m glad that my work turned out just right.
I took a few things away from this assignment. It is important to get the measurements of space right as wrong ones will mess up the entire technical drawing. Furthermore, I learned how to use many new different types of drawing conventions that will be very useful to me in the future.
ASSIGNMENT 3
For this assignment, we had to produce a set of orthographic drawings of a mini-chalet that we would design, to be situated in the lake of Taylor's Lakeside Campus. The aim of this assignment is to encourage us to use more different types of drawing conventions and also help with the development our drawing and design skills even further.
progress
After the briefing, I started working on plotting down the floor plan according to the measurements provided in the brief, alongside flipping through the IKEA catalog and roughly sketching out the layout of the chalet. I also did some research on some specific symbols for different kinds of windows and doors. The next week was busy, as two elevation drawings, as well as our site plan, was required by the following week. I found it challenging as I was very confused with many things. Personally, I get confused easily but I managed to overcome it by doing more research and paying more attention during tutorials. During week 11, I worked on the section drawings. It was the hardest part of this assignment as I faced a lot of challenges. I did a lot of research on the roof and tiles as they were very repetitive and confusing. I also did my site plan this week and redrew it many times as I couldn’t seem to get it right. I essentially spent week twelve and thirteen doing the amendments needed before inking my drawing. I was very tired of inking drawings as I tried my best to get the correct line weight. After all my hard work, I managed to finish the assignment on time and handed it in through google drive.
For this assignment, I have learnt even more drawing conventions compared to the last one. Furthermore, I also learnt how to use and plan my furniture with the given space wisely. This assignment was definitely the one I had the most fun with as I could design my own chalet.
