Module
ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO I
13 / 04 / 2020
This mdule is conducted by Ms Delliya Zain
This module aims students to present and explain design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body, construction and materiality in terms of tectonics. Students will also undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design. This will be enhanced with understanding of anthropometrics and designing intrapersonal space with creative exercise involving the body movements and experiences of the user.
PROJECT 1
In this project, we explored expressions through architectural design elements and principles by creating tattoo stamps. The process began with sketching, where we brainstormed and iterated on initial concepts. Through detailed drawing, we refined these ideas, paying close attention to design elements such as line, shape, and form. Composition played a crucial role in arranging the geometric shapes to achieve a balanced and harmonious design.
PART 1-3
For Part 1 to Part 3 we were task to create Tattoo stamps for different parts using circles, squares, triangles along with different design elements and principles. Part 1 and 2 were similar as we had to sketch and draw geometry. For Part 3 we had to implement the different triangle rules and principles.
PART 4
For Part 4, we were told to compose models accordingly by refering to one tattoo stamp. The challenge was to create 6 different models that had similar plan views but different elevation views.
PART 5
We had to use various elements and principles are Part 5 cube manipulation. The models are created using different types of cube structures.(For model 4 please check pg 21 of the pdf below as we didn't manage to add it in the slides for presentation)
PART 6
Rickle Void
Stock Pile
Fanned Pile
For Part 6, we had to combine our models from part 5 into 3 final models. We even named our models accordingly. Part 6 also included the presentation board which was made by me with the help of other members.
REFLECTION
After completing Project 1, I gained several valuable insights. I effectively applied Discipline-Specific Knowledge and Communication Skills throughout the project. I utilized various design elements and principles in creating my tattoo stamps and models. Additionally, I collaborated well with my teammates, which not only helped us successfully complete the project but also allowed me to get to know them better. Through this teamwork, we learned from each other's strengths and weaknesses. Overall, this project enhanced my understanding of design elements and principles and fostered stronger connections with my course mates.
PROJECT 2
Project 2 Model (Subdued Laze)
Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration-Isolation Structure
For Project 2, we were tasked with building an isolation tectonic structure tailored to our personal feelings and emotions experienced during the pandemic. This project required us to delve deeply into our emotional states and use these insights to guide the design process. In addition to the emotional and ergonomic considerations, we were also required to conduct comprehensive research on the materials we would use. This research included understanding the properties, benefits, and limitations of various materials. Importantly, the final design had a strict spatial limitation; the structure could not exceed a volume of 5 cubic meters. This constraint challenged us to think creatively and efficiently about how to maximize the functionality and comfort of the space within a very limited volume.
PROGRESS
For the first week, I did more research on my dominant emotion, human ergonomics and antropometry. I jotted my research down on paper for my DPSJ. Since Project 2 was a continuation of Project 1, we had to choose a model from Project 1 and implement the design elements and principles into our new model. The model I chose was Fanned Pile and the element I extracted was rhythm.
After identifying my dominant emotion, I then proceeded to draw and sketch designs for my model according to my research. This means that once I understood the primary emotion that I wanted to express or focus on, I utilized this insight as the foundation for my creative process. I conducted thorough research to gather relevant information, inspiration, and conceptual frameworks. Based on this research, I translated my findings into visual representations by creating detailed drawings and sketches.

REFLECTION
After accomplishing Project2, I have learnt a few things. I learnt how to identify emotions and also learn more about the human ergonomics and anthropometry. The TGC skills that I learnt are Thinking and Problem Solving skills along with Lifelong Learning. This is because I had to make sure to do through research before creating my design. Furthermore, I had to refer to many different references to create my structure. Overall, I think I did ok for Project 2, I made some mistake but by making mistakes, one can learn from them and grow.
PROJECT 3
Interpretation and Representation: Principles, Tectonics and Sensory –
Sensory Space
In project 3, students have to look back at your tectonic structure and further develop it to a Sensory Space (20m3, +- 3 m3) to anticipate and accommodate users’ needs and emotions. How does the user response to the design? What does it represent when you look at it at a different perspective? Are there any reoccurring elements or strong implementation of elements and principles? Was the anthropometry and ergonomic of the tectonic incorporated successfully?
PROGRESS
For the first week, I did more research on my dominant emotion, human ergonomics and antropometry. I jotted my research down on paper for my DPSJ. For this Project I also did research on sensory space along with case studies and precedence studies as it will help with my design development and design intention. I also made a checklist to make sure I don't miss out anything.
For the second and third week, I spent time refining my design intention. I also started sketching out ideas of my design. I also attended tutorial every week to get some comments from ms dee and try to improve from there. While I did that, I also did sketches and drawings on my tattoo stamp and abstract art.
I also did test models as making test models is a form of discovery and exploration. It can also show progress and growth of a design.
TEST MODEL 1
For this test model, I tried to create the basic form of my structure
TEST MODEL 2
For this test model I improved on how the structure can connect to each other more
TEST MODEL 3
The changes I made for this model are, elevation of structure where one can climb and down
TEST MODEL 4
For this test model, I made I enclose the exit a little as it seemed too open and disconnected from the structure. I also created platform like where I can crawl up or down the structure.

PRESENTAION BOARDS
REFLECTION
After accomplishing Project 3, I have learnt a few things. I learnt how to integrate senses into a space to create a sensorial space. Furthermore, I also learnt how to create presentation boards look more neat and presentable. The TGC skills I've learnt are Lifelong Learning, Communication skills and Thinking and Solving problems. I had to do in-depth research regarding sensorial spaces in order to fully understand the reason why it is important and how it affects my design intention. For communication skills, I often communicate with my tutor Ms Dee on my progress or how I can do better or improve. Lastly, I used thinking and solving problem skills to create a good design structure. As this is the last project of the semester, I have made mistakes but also learnt from them, it was a tired semester but it feels fulfilling and fun after accomplishing everything.
