ELEMENTS IN NATURAL AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

13   /   04   /   2020

ASSIGNMENT 1

For this indivual assignment, we were tasked to create a Nature journal based on the living and non-living things in EARTH 2007 documentary in an infographic style.

Objectives:

-Create awareness of the elements of nature

-To be exposed to elements of nature and it's basic unit, form and function

Progress

These are some progress of flora and fauna. I drew some drafts to plan out the shape and sizes of the pictures so I have space to write info on the animals and plants I have chosen after watching the documentary.

After drawing the drafts for chosen plants and animals, I showed them to Ms Renee and took her comments to make improvements so that it will look better to suit the requirements. The medium I used for this assignment is poster colour. I also used markers to outline my drawings so that is looks more realistic. After completing all the journal, I compiled it and uploaded it as a PDF file to be viewed and marked by Ms Renee.

Throughout this assignment, i realized how beautiful nature truly is and how easily it can be destroyed by mankind. I was exposed to the elements of nature and learnt how to identify them by utilizing my digital literacy, lifelong learning and thinking and problem solving skills to complete the assignment. I used the internet effectively by searching information using internet and watched documentaries on the topic on YouTube. I learned how to think critically and analysed the information obtain effectively to put it in an infographic manner. Furthermore, I managed to learn and grow independently during this pandemic.

THOUGHTS AND REFLECTION ABOUT KOWLOON WALLED CITY

9TH june

Kowloon Walled city is one of the most unique structures to have ever exist. Based on what I have learnt from the Walled city, it is important to have knowledge of built environment and to also abide by the building law to ensure healthy, safe and positive life quality. Since there were no laws present, people just build houses on top on houses. This caused the building to have leaky pipes and also bad hygiene as they didn't really cared. Furthermore, it is important to abide by the building law as it exists to maintain quality life. I personally think that the authorities shouldn't have demolish the city as it can be turned into an historical site. After the virtual trip to Kowloon Walled City, I was amazed at how people lived in that environment as I personally felt the conditions weren't up to standard. Yet after hearing what the former residents had to say about their former nostalgic life in the city. They prefer they're lives in the city, they were poor but happy. If I were them, I would have said the same thing if I was raised there as it would have been my home. In conclusion, Kowloon Walled city has played a significant role in history of architecture as it has broken barriers and laws of traditional architecture.

THOUGHTS AND REFLECTION ABOUT BHUTAN

4TH JUNE

The virtual trip to Bhutan has given more so much more insight regarding global warming and efforts to save our planet. In my opinion, I think that more countries should try their best to learn from Bhutan regarding reducing greenhouse gases. In the Ted-talk given by the prime minister of Bhutan, he stated that Bhutan is a country of carbon-dioxide sink, as they remove most of the world's carbon dioxide every year. Furthermore, they have enforced laws to maintain and preserve their land so that various flora and fauna are able to thrive. If every country in the world put in more effort to reduce green house gases, global warming can be prevented, along with other benefits such as flourishing flora and fauna, and prevent increasing sea level. Furthermore, their culture preservation methods must be an example to others as they have implemented their culture and tradition in their daily lives. This not only prevents their culture from being lost, they can also attract tourists and share their tradition with other. In conclusion, I think that if every country took more efforts like Bhutan to save the planet, our future generations will have a peaceful, beautiful and clean home to live in.

ASSIGNMENT 2

For this assignment, we were assigned into groups of 4 to develop a 3-5 minute video to discuss about a nature topic. My team mates were Aishath Malaaha Ismail, Eric Mubangka Mukena, Daryl Goh and me. We were assigned to do a topic on rainforests.

Objectives:

1) To create awareness of the elements of nature

2) To be exposed to the elements of the nature and its basic unit, form and function

PROGRESS

After discussion we nominated Daryl as our group leader. We then discussed specifically what we wanted to discussed about the topic given by Ms Renee. Then we split parts on what information to find about the rainforest. After compiling our research, I helped write a draft of our script. Then, we edited it  together on parts that that we extra so that our video will not exceed the maximum time limit. After we finish editing the script, Daryl volunteered to help edit our video. Therefore, we each recorded the parts we had to say and shared it with him through google drive. After everything was done, we double checked it and submitted it within time frame given.

Thoughout the project, I was exposed to the biotic and abiotic elements of nature and had a better awareness of elements by applying my digital literacy, citizenship and global perspectives and communication skills. As this is a group project, we communicated appropriately in zoom and whatsapp to get a good result we can all agree on. We also search for information from various sources on the internet as well as sending our video recording to to be compiled together. Furthermore, I am glad to have such cooperative team members.

ASSIGNMENT 3

ASSIGNMENT 3A

In this assignment, we were tasked to create an infographic pamphlet of our hometown. My hometown lies in the heart of Selangor state, which is SS2 in the Petaling Jaya district.

Objectives:

1) To extend the knowledge of the built environment at it's basic unit, form and function

2) To understand the interrelation between built environment and its user

PROGRESS

I did as much research as I could on my hometown. I did research through the internet to obtain sufficient information. Furthermore, I used Google earth to do zoning on the area to identify the different types of buildings that are present in the area. For this assignment, I decided to use water colour and marker as the medium. I also used art paper as the material for drawing as it is thick and the paper will not break easily. The material I used to compile my pamphlet together was clear tape.

This assignment has allowed me to have a deeper understanding of my hometown. I was able to accomplish this assignment by applying the digital literacy, lifelong learning and intrapersonal skills. I used the internet and Google Earth to search for information as well as virtually visiting my hometown through this pandemic period. I also learnt how to extract and utilize the information found effectively and demonstrating it in an infographic manner. As we are having online classes, I managed to be self reliant throughout the assignment and developed self dependence.

ASSIGNMENT 3B

For this assignment, we were tasked to do investigations on urban spaces. This assignment was split into Part A and B. Furthermore, we were tasked to work in groups. My team members consist of Aishath Malaaha Ismail, Chow Yong Xuan, Damia Khalysa Azurin, Omar Osman, Thariini Muneswaran and me.

Objectives:

1) To extend knowledge of the built environment at its basic unit, form and function

2) To understand the interrelation between built environment and its user

3) To question, analyse and articulate the impact by the built environment

PROGRESS

For Part A after a series of discussion, we decided to choose places in England to do comparisons between urban, suburban and rural areas. We chose London, Chelsea, Yorkshire Dales respectively. For Part B, we did an investigation of Clarke Quay in Singapore as it was given by Ms Renee. After a series of discussions, we each took the responsibility to do some research for certain parts. I was in charge of doing topograhy, safety and sense of place for Part A. For Part B I was responsible for doing purpose of visit (who and why), peak hours/seasons and safety. After we completed our research we each complied our own information in our own boxes in Canva.

In conclusion, I had a better understanding of urban, suburban and rural area and is able to differentiate and compare the different development. I've also learnt the techniques of urban investigation by applying digital literacy, thinking and problem solving skills and interpersonal skills. Firstly, I've used various digital mediums to search for information such as google earth and the internet. Furthermore, I also analysed the information obtained and evaluated them effectively. There was a lot of research needed for this assignment but the segregation between members made it much easier. Also, I've managed to communicate properly between my group members to finish this assignment within the given time.
