Module Introduction
Buidling Construction and Material module intends to inform the students on the basic building construction and materials used in the construction of small to medium scale buildings and focuses on developing an understanding of the principle of the building elements which include the substructure and superstructure and common construction materials such as concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass. The module will describe the manufacturing process, properties and typical uses of these materials in construction for each material. Continuous assessments such as assignments, and tutorial activities will be undergo to ascertain the objective and outcome of the module is achieved. Our tutor for this semester is Dr.Suja
Project 1: Famous Architect’s Building, Materials Application
Individually, student need to choose an architect from the given list by the lecturers. From the chosen architect, the student needs to identify five 5 architectural building materials and two 2 structural building materials based on the case study. Students are also to study on the ideas and concept behind the selection of the material and of the building. Additionally, students are also to describe the installation 1 of the materials applied on the selected building. Building’s selection can be from any time or age. The compilation of the findings needs to be nicely composed in two (2) A3 papers.
Reflection
This project has allowed me to have learn how to distinguish between architectural and structural materials, to describe types of building materials used for buildings and to demonstrate the installation of building materials on buildings. The TGCS that I implemented are lifelong learning and self discipline as I needed these to do my own research to accomplish this project.
Project 2: Construction Drawing
This group assignment will emphasize on producing a construction drawing set that consist of detailing of building elements on superstructure which include floor, wall, door, window, staircase, and roof. This is an integration assignment. In a group of five 5 to 6 students need to produce a construction drawing of their studio work. Only choose one 1 from architecture studio’s 2nd project. I worked with Chew Yun Fay, Chow Yong Xuan, Chan Sin Yie, Zia Ibrahim and Ridhwan Muzakir for this project.
Reflection
Throughout this project, I was able to develop an understanding and applying of the structural elements in construction industry and demonstrate awareness of how buildings are developed in response to practical considerations, construction manual drawing as well as understanding the knowledge of construction, material, and technology. Furthermore, the TGCS that I learned and apply are Intrapersonal skills, Digital Literacy and Disipline of Specific Knowledge as I had to find information online while communicating with my teammates to make sure our project is successful.
